Owner's Voice Vol.27 Motoki Residence

Aesthetic life for two couples to enjoy the 2nd stage of life

Three years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Motoki, now in their 60s, built a new house in the center of Nara Prefecture to enjoy their second life.
Their main space, the LDK, is beautifully coordinated with Toyo Kitchen Style products.
We asked the wife about the usability in daily life and her commitment to beautiful living.

Aesthetic life for two couples to enjoy the 2nd stage of life

Building a home in one's 60s, the goal was to create a home with a low lifestyle feel.

Upon opening the front door, you will see a long hallway leading to the back of the house.
Above the hallway is a stairwell, and light from the skylight softly fills the place.
Is this a gallery? Or is this a private villa?
With heightened anticipation, we climbed the stairs at the end of the corridor to the second floor.
From the entrance to the stairs is a space between the outside and the inside, and from the inside of this door is the interior.
Beyond the door that Mr. Motoki points out, the LDK with the black marble "iNO CD-LAND" as its centerpiece creates a calm atmosphere.
What we wanted to achieve in this house was to create a living space that didn't feel lived in," says Motoki.
The kitchen was placed at the center of the space because we wanted to bring the image of a hotel suite into the home.
Now that they have finished raising their children and are living alone, the couple says that in their pursuit of creating a home that eliminates the unnecessary, they found Toyo Kitchen Style.
I knew about Toyo Kitchen Style because I have always liked Kartell," he says.
It has a stylish design and looks like a foreign brand, but in fact it is a Japanese manufacturer with a long history that has its production base in Gifu.
As my parents are from Gifu, I felt some affinity with the company.
So when I started thinking about building a house, I decided to take the plunge and sign up for a PARALLELO Sink trial session to actually try out the kitchen.

The results were "a series of surprises," says Mr. Motoki.

"Through the total experience from washing vegetables to cooking and washing dishes, I realized how easy it was to use Zero flow kitchen with PARALLELO Sink, and I really wanted to use iNO in our new house.

The choice to eliminate Range Hood from the top

The kitchen and table are connected by a straight line, and the iNO CD-LAND was chosen.
We didn't want to have a lot of different things in the space, so we chose a type that could be integrated with the table."
After the trial session, Mr. Motoki visited the showroom with the architect and decided on the layout of the room and the placement of items based on the dimensions of the iNO CD-LAND so that it would fit beautifully in the space.
The table ventilated Range Hood from Gaggenau was used to create a kitchen with a higher level of interior design.

From the beginning, I didn't want to hang the Range Hood from the top.
That alone would make it look oppressive, and it would also make it difficult to clean in the first place.
In that respect, the elevating type is completely stored inside the worktop when not in use, so I thought it would be nice to have a cleaner look for the entire kitchen.
Moreover, the panels and oil catcher can be removed at hand for easy cleaning, and the odor-catching ability is quite good.
When using an induction cooktop, or even when having a pot on the dining table placed by the window, simply turn this table ventilation and there is no lingering odor."

Gaggenau elevated Range Hood "Table Ventilation" with 4 exhaust types plus timer function.

Reduce the amount of light and add it only where needed.

In the Honki residence, the kitchen, which tends to show the most lived-in feel, has been smartly organized, and the LDK, which is connected to the kitchen, is also carefully designed to eliminate the lived-in feel.
Take lighting, for example.
We limit the amount of light inside the room, mainly using downlights, and add spotlights when we need more light for eating or reading," says Mr. Motoki.
True to his words, he placed Kartell 's "Goodnight" lamp, which diffuses gentle light like a lamp, on the table by the window, and "Kabuki," a floor lamp clad in a design like lace fabric, beside the sofa.
The light puddles in the large space accentuate the beautiful blank space.

The house I used to live in was much brighter," says Kabuki.
It had lots of windows and a balcony.
These things were necessary for a home for raising children.
But now that the children are independent and have left home, there is no need for verandas, overly bright rooms, or curtains (laughs).
In this house, I chose furniture with consideration of how comfortable it would be for the couple to live together.
In order for each of them to spend their time freely while feeling the presence of the other, Mr. Motoki chose a single type of "New Sicilia" sofa and a footstool.
They enjoy rearranging them according to season, purpose, and mood.

A unique Kartell carpet is placed in front of the sofa as an accent. The table and chairs by the window are used for guests as well as for daily computer work.

The trick is to use both without increasing the number of things to reduce the sense of living.

Finally, we asked Mr. Motoki, who has been using Toyo Kitchen Style products for three years, about the daily usability.
The worktop is stainless steel, so there are no scratches, such as hot food being placed directly on the worktop.
The stainless steel prevents discoloration and other damage even when hot food is placed directly on the worktop, and above all, the deep sink is really easy to use.
For example, even if you put a large pot in the sink, the depth allows it to slide freely without interfering with the cutting board or multi-plate.
Also, since cooking can be done in the sink, there is no need to buy a separate cutting board.
This is perfect for me, because I want to live with as little stuff as possible.

The key to living neatly is to use things that can also be used for other purposes," says Motoki.
The wide sink, which is not just a sink but can also be used for cooking, is a perfect example of dual use.

Speaking of dual use, I really like this one, too.
The one he showed us was the "Mirror 015 Box" by Toyo Kitchen Style.
It is a popular item that doubles as both a mirror and a storage space, much like a tricked-out box.
I used to have a dresser in my bedroom in my old house, but I stopped using it and now I put my makeup in the bathroom and check my appearance before going out right here in the foyer.
I store accessories, keys, etc. on the shelf behind the rotating mirror, so I can get set up and ready to go.
Stylish-looking mirror storage is located by the front door.
The choice to combine functionality and aesthetics is a brilliant one.

Mr. Motoki
As well as cooking, Mr. Motoki says he also likes to maintain his kitchen on a daily basis. To keep my favorite kitchen clean for a long time, I remove the multi-plate every day after use and wipe both sides of it dry. I think it makes it easier to keep the inside of the sink dry. The care with which she uses her beloved items supports the beauty of her home.
